Digital Wallet Frequently Asked Questions

General Information

[expand title=”What Is a Digital Wallet?” tag=”h4″]

Digital wallets are exactly what they sound like. They’re electronic versions of your physical wallet. They can store things like credit card information, loyalty cards, and even tickets you’ve purchased.

You can access that personal data from devices like your smartphone, smartwatch, computer, or tablet. This can help you declutter and avoid carrying a bunch of physical cards around with you. And it can make payments quick and easy.[/expand]

Ask your merchant to see if they accept digital wallet payments or look for the contactless symbol in stores. NOTE: Garmin cannot be used online or in-app at all. Apple Pay can only be used online in Safari. Google Pay can only be used online in Google Chrome.[/expand]

[expand title=”How Do Digital Wallets Work?” tag=”h4″]

Most digital wallets come with an app you can add to your computer, phone, watch, or other smart devices.
When you’re out shopping, you can pay with most wallets by holding your device near a terminal with the contactless symbol.
To complete the transaction, you might be required to provide a passcode or authenticate through fingerprint or facial recognition. From there, you can use the app to make purchases, pay someone directly or even use tickets for things like concerts or travel.[/expand]

[expand title=”Is there a charge to use Digital Wallet?” tag=”h4″]

No, there is no fee to use any of the participating Digital Wallets. However, message and data rates apply, depending on your data plan.[/expand]

[expand title=”What are the benefits of a Digital Wallet?” tag=”h4″]

There are many benefits to making purchases with your Patriot debit/credit card(s) using your digital wallet, including:
Convenience – you don’t have to worry about having your card with you or pulling it out of your wallet or bag while making a purchase.
Secure – Digital wallets can’t be stolen or lost like regular wallets. The data stored in the wallet is encrypted. Your actual account numbers aren’t transmitted during a transaction. During a transaction, the merchant receives a one-time password, or token, to complete the transaction. In this process, your card number is never provided, making it nearly impossible for a fraudster to take your card information.[/expand]

Security

[expand title=”Are Digital Wallets fraud proof?” tag=”h4″]

Digital wallets are more fraud-proof than your physical card due to tokenization, which replaces card account numbers with unique alpha/numeric codes that retain all essential information without compromising the actual card number. Even if a merchant gets hacked, your credit or debit card number is not compromised because your card number was not used. Your payment card information, such as the 16-digit account number found on the front of your card, will be replaced with a digital account number that can be securely stored on devices and used to make purchases. Your credit and debit card numbers are NOT stored on the device. This helps to reduce the potential for fraud.[/expand]

[expand title=”Are Digital Wallets Safe?” tag=”h4″]

While you should always be concerned about your personal information, major digital wallet apps are widely considered to be safe. In fact, they are likely safer than carrying your financial information and other sensitive documents in a physical wallet.[/expand]
