Stay Alert: Protecting Yourself from Computer Refund Scams
junio 15, 2026

Scammers are constantly finding new ways to target individuals and families, often using fear, urgency, and confusion to pressure people into making quick financial decisions. Recently, the Waynesboro Police Department shared information regarding a computer refund scam that has affected local residents — including one case that resulted in a significant financial loss.
These scams often begin with a pop-up message appearing on a computer claiming to be from Microsoft 365 or another trusted company. The message urges the user to call a phone number for immediate assistance. Once contact is made, scammers may falsely claim that an accidental refund was deposited into the victim’s bank account and insist the money be returned.
Victims are commonly pressured to:
- Stay on the phone continuously
- Withdraw large amounts of cash from their bank’
- Purchase gift cards or send money
- Meet a courier to hand over cash
- Allow remote access to their computer
These tactics are designed to create panic and prevent individuals from taking time to verify the situation.
Tips to Help Protect Yourself
To help safeguard yourself and your loved ones from scams like these, keep the following in mind:
- Legitimate companies like Microsoft will not contact you through pop-up messages demanding payment or personal information.
- No legitimate business or financial institution will send someone to collect cash from you.
- Never withdraw money, send funds, or purchase gift cards because of an unexpected phone call, text, or computer alert.
- Do not give unknown individuals remote access to your device.
- If someone claims money was accidentally deposited into your account, contact your financial institution directly using a verified phone number.
If you receive a suspicious message, pop-up, phone call, or email:
- Do not engage with the sender
- Close the pop-up or hang up the phone
- Contact your local police department or financial institution directly
Older adults are often specifically targeted by these types of scams, making education and awareness especially important. Taking a moment to pause, verify information, and speak with a trusted family member or financial institution can help prevent financial loss.
