Toad Attacks: The Phone Scam You Didn’t Know Had a Name

Scam Alert on phone screen

When many people think about cybercrime, they imagine suspicious emails or fake websites. However, not every scam begins online — some start with a phone call. In certain cases, scammers can even manipulate caller ID to make it appear as though the call is coming directly from Patriot Federal Credit Union. They may pose as Patriot team members and, at times, even use the names of real employees to seem more convincing. If you ever feel unsure about a call, hang up and contact us directly at 888-777-9982 to verify the request.

What is a Toad Attack?

A Toad Attack—short for Telephone-Oriented Attack Delivery—is a scam where criminals use phone calls or text messages to trick people into sharing sensitive information. These attacks rely heavily on social engineering, meaning scammers manipulate emotions like fear or urgency to get what they want.

Unlike traditional phishing, which usually happens through email, Toad Attacks target victims through voice calls (vishing) or text messages (smishing), often posing as trusted organizations such as banks, utility companies, or tech support.

How Toad Attacks Work

Toad Attacks often begin with a call that appears legitimate. Scammers may use caller ID spoofing to make it look like the call is coming from a trusted business or local number.

During the conversation, the caller may:

  • Claim there is suspicious activity on your account
  • Say your account will be locked or closed unless you act immediately
  • Ask you to “verify” personal or financial information

In some cases, you may receive a text message urging you to call a number or click a link—both of which can lead to fraudulent activity.

The goal is always the same: to pressure you into sharing confidential details such as login credentials, account numbers, or personal information.

Why These Attacks Are Effective

Toad Attacks work because they feel personal. Hearing a voice on the other end of the line can make a scam seem more legitimate than an email. Scammers are trained to sound professional, confident, and convincing, sometimes even using scripts that closely mimic real customer service calls.

How to Protect Yourself from Toad Attacks

  • Be cautious with phone requests
    • Patriot will never ask you for your online banking password, debit card pin, or one-time passcodes over the phone.
  • Slow down and verify.
    • If a call feels urgent or threatening, hang up. Then contact the organization directly using a phone number from an official website or your statement.
  • Use multi-factor authentication
    • MFA adds an extra layer of protection, even if someone gains access to your login credentials
  • Don’t trust caller ID alone
    • Scammers can make phone numbers appear legitimate. Caller ID is helpful – but not foolproof.
  • Report Suspicious calls
    • If you receive a suspicious call claiming to be from Patriot Federal Credit Union, contact us directly so we can help protect your accounts.
