FAQs
Courtesy Pay allows you to overdraw your checking account up to $1,000 in order to cover accidental overdrafts. A $35 fee will be assessed for each transaction. There is no cost for Courtesy Pay if no overdrafts occur. If you are able to use Linked Account Transfers, Courtesy Pay can be used after Linked Account Transfers have been exhausted.
While no one usually plans to or wants to have an overdraft occur in their account, sometimes it just happens. Courtesy Pay is no cost to you until you use it.
In a situation where you do have an overdraft occur, Courtesy Pay can save you money and embarrassment. For instance, if you write a check to a business and it bounces because of insufficient funds, you will likely owe that business a fee, and you will be charged a non-sufficient funds fee on your account. If you have Courtesy Pay, your check will go through as if the funds were there, so you will only incur the Courtesy Pay fee on your checking account.
Linked Account Transfers are the primary and least costly option for you to protect yourself from accidental overdrafts. If an item is presented and you do not have sufficient available funds in your checking account, available funds will be transferred from the prime share (savings account) and (Patriot VISA Credit Card) to cover the item. The fee for a Linked Account Transfer from the prime share depends on the checking account you have – there is no fee if you have Rewards or Dividend Checking. There is no fee for transfers from a line of credit but interest will accrue on the advanced funds. There is no eligibility requirement for Linked Account Transfers.
Not only can Linked Account Transfers save you money, they can also save you embarrassment. Linked Account Transfers should be the first line of defense in the case of an overdraft. This option has no or a low fee ($5 per transfer) – depending on which accounts you have – compared to Courtesy Pay which is always $35 for each transaction. So, in some cases, using Linked Account Transfers can be completely free to you AND no one will ever have to know that you didn’t have the available funds in your checking account. Even if your accounts are not eligible for free Linked Account Transfers, this service is of no cost to you until an overdraft occurs.
